Cyber Security - How HR Can Make An Impact

With the continued increase of threats in the environment, attacks on organizations, and publicized data breaches, more and more organizations are focusing on implementing security awareness practices. For many, this effort revolves around training. However, that is only one piece of the puzzle. The implementation of secure practices relies on a shared understanding of the threats the organization is facing and is dependent on the people within that system to maintain a solid security posture. Data security, privacy and compliance has always been, and will continue to be, a critical factor for HR, but it is increasingly difficult to get it right given the changing pace of business. Companies are increasingly hiring contractors, working with 3rd parties, and enabling a mobile or remote workforce. There are countless laws and company policies that must be adhered to relating to data security. Additionally, regardless of these regulations, HR is trusted to protect people’s personal data as well as sensitive business information. These all require time and effort as well as constant vigilance. However, HR already has a considerable amount on its plate and can only spend so much money, time, and resources on security.

We will explore four key activities that can make the most impact now and in the future:

• Perform a risk assessment of your people data

• Provide security training for both your HR team and your workforce

• Create a culture of security awareness

• Discuss security with 3rd party partners and review contracts, insurance, and liability
